A genuine mobile safari for those looking for a more adventurous experience. Accommodation is in comfortable dome tents with en-suite bathrooms. This outstanding mobile safari gives you an opportunity to gain an insight into areas and wildlife not necessarily available on a typical fly-in safari.
Dates: 1-11 August 2015
Cost: £4,700 per person sharing, excluding flights (50% non-refundable deposit payable upon booking; see below for details).
Day 1 International flight to Oliver Tambo Airport (Johannesburg), if required.
Days 2-4 Connect with an Air Botswana flight to Maun, from where a chartered flight will take us to the Moremi Game Reserve. Our first three nights are spent in the Xakanaxa region, exploring the surrounding wilderness on morning and afternoon game drives. Moremi lies on the eastern extremity of the Okavango Delta. Habitats here range from wide-open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus-fringed channels, vast stands of Miscanthus and Phragmites, woodland and savannah. As a result of the extremely variable habitat the diversity of both wildlife and birdlife is excellent.
Days 5-7 Following an early morning breakfast we take a slow drive through Moremi Game Reserve north-east towards the Khwai Community Area, one of the most scenic areas of the Okavango. The Khwai River forms a boundary between the reserve and the community area. We spend the following three nights camping at an exclusive campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives both during the day and at night. We will also have the opportunity to explore the surrounding wilderness on foot and enjoy an up-close-and-personal encounter with Botswana’s flora and fauna. This is a genuine Mecca for bird enthusiasts in Botswana.
Days 8-10 We head further north to Chobe National Park, where we spend the following three nights camping in an exclusive wilderness campsite in the Savuti region, exploring the desert-like landscape on game drives. The most challenging part of the trip is crossing the Magwikwe Sandridge, with a winding track through deep sand that makes for interesting travel in the early summer — a day when anything could happen! The Savuti Marsh has been the stage for many of the most dramatic wildlife documentaries in Africa, with the interaction between large prides of lion and elephant one of the most interesting aspects. The marsh is prime cheetah country and in the wet season it is not unusual to see wild dogs hunting in Savuti.
Day 11 On our final day on safari we leave Savuti to travel along the Chobe River, stopping at Chobe Safari Lodge for lunch before taking a leisurely afternoon boat cruise before our transfer back to the airport in time for our return flights.
