The Lake District is often described as the most sublimely beautiful landscape in the UK, and it offers endless photogenic opportunities (the Castlerigg Stone Circle, Rydal Water, Derwent Water and Blencathra, to name just a few). On this course we will concentrate on photographing the landscape around Buttermere as there is exceptionally beautiful light there around the time of the autumn equinox. The highlight of the weekend will be photographing the best supermoon of the year (weather permitting).
We will be staying in a comfortable, well-equipped self-catering cottage very close to Buttermere. The cottage has a view of Loweswater with the forest and fells beyond. Red squirrels and a vast array of bird life visit the beautiful garden of this 18th Century, traditional character cottage. The award winning Kirkstile Inn is within 10 minutes walking distance and is renowned for excellent home cooked food and its own brewery.
The aim of the weekend is very much to help you develop your own creative vision and hone the skills to make that vision a reality.
When you have booked your trip Adriaan will contact you to discuss your level of photographic experience, your objectives for the weekend and what equipment may be useful to bring along.
Over the weekend Adriaan and Ingrid will provide photographic briefing sessions and will be on hand to provide advice on location (if and when required). You will also have the option to participate in photography feedback sessions. During these sessions Adriaan and Ingrid can provide one-to-one support to address any areas of difficulty or uncertainty, to advise on composition, etc.
Ingrid is a professional photographer with many years’ experience. Having grown up in Norway and Canada she has a natural affinity with the landscape of the Lake District and can spot hidden gems that others often miss. You can have a look at some of her fine art images on her website.
The cost of the 3 night photography course is £750 per person sharing (£150 single supplement) — this includes all tuition, meals, transport during the course and accommodation, but excludes alcohol, insurance and travel to and from our base location in Buttermere.
A non-refundable deposit of £190 is payable at the time of booking with the balance due 12 weeks before the workshop.
The course is run by Adriaan and Ingrid in conjunction with Peter Goodwin of Travel Counsellors Ltd (a doubly-bonded company), which means that your money is fully protected in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong. Alongside ATOL protection, Travel Counsellors Ltd operate a unique Travel Counsellors Trust which protects every single element of your booking. That’s peace of mind you don’t get elsewhere! Find out more.
Places are limited to eight (8) participants per course so early booking is recommended. A couple of places are available for (non-photography) partners at a reduced rate of £350; please contact Adriaan for details and availability.
All tuition will be in English.
Moderate — The course will involve a degree of walking across loose stones and steep hills (it is the Lake District, after all!). However, we may split into two parties depending on the fitness levels of the participants.
You will need to be prepared for bad weather (for yourself and your camera) as this often provides the best conditions for landscape photography.
You will also need to prepared for early morning starts and late evenings: sunrise at this time of year is around 7 am and sunset is at around 7 pm.
Contact Adriaan if you have any questions about the weekend or book now.
